Agenda Highlights
King Food Bank Presentation
The King Township Food Bank was founded in 2004 by Carol Ann Trabert who partnered with Gerald Fisher, Mary Bogan and Arlene Kress. In January 2005 they held their first food distribution serving just a handful of families. Today, King’s Food Bank is still entirely run by volunteers, now with Geoff Simpson as president, and serves over 500 individuals each month at three distribution centers located in King City, Nobleton and Kettleby.
King’s Food Bank offers options to patrons with 40% of families receiving prepackaged boxes containing nonperishable goods, while the other 60% receive grocery carts so they can select foods that meet their dietary needs, whether medical, religious or cultural. Everyone also receives fresh produce and eggs. This flexibility, while beneficial for families, though increases operational costs significantly.
The current space in the basement of Christ Church Hall can no longer keep up with demand and they are in desperate need of a larger location that can accommodate fridges, freezers, and a loading dock. This would allow them to accept more nonperishable and fresh food donations and ease the physical strain on volunteers, many of whom are seniors.
To raise much needed funds, the Food Bank is hosting its annual Sip & Savour on Thursday, October 24 at Seneca Polytechnics King campus. The event is well known as King’s cocktail party of the year and will feature a Hawaiian Luau theme this year. Purchase your ticket here.
York Region Transit Presentation
2024 Improvements in Service:
Increased frequency of the Route 88 bus which terminates at Seneca King Campus to improve Saturday frequency.
One Fare Program was launched in February to have fare integration between YRT and TTC, as well as between Go Transit and the TTC. Now you can travel on YRT and transfer to the TTC on just one fair and vice versa. You can also do the same between GO and the TTC where you just pay the GO fare and the TTC fare is free.
YRT completed several community consultations and received the following feedback:
Request to reinstate the Route 22 – King bus
Request to provide On-Request service between King City and Oak Ridges
Request to travel train students on how to use YRT On-Request
Request for transit service in Nobleton travelling east on King Rd or south on Hwy. 27
Request for next trip display information at bus stops in King City
YRT 2024 Transit Initiatives include:
- Introduce Sunday service and expand Saturday service span for the Route 96 Keele-Yonge line (teal line on map) and Route 88 Bathurst line
- Introduce expanded On-Request King trip plans between communities in the township where a fixed route is not available
YRT Services in King Township
- The dark blue line up Bathurst and west on 15th Sideroad represents Route 88
- The teal line that come up Keele St, east on King Rd and up Yonge St represents Route 96
- The light blue shaded area represents the expanded On-Request King which can take you from an address in the area to/from a YRT route or another address where a YRT route option is not available. Learn more here.
- YRT also offers a 65+ On-Request transit service for seniors 65 years and older. The service is offered throughout York Region for seniors who want to try taking public transit using a smaller vehicle that picks you up at your home. On-Request 65+ uses smaller vehicles like sedans, minivans and small buses to transport customers, and vehicles are thoroughly cleaned. If you are a senior travelling within York Region, simply call YRT during the office hours and On-Request 65+ will pick you up and take you to your desired location within 5 km of your home. This can be a grocery store, doctor’s office, pharmacy or any other address. https://www.yrt.ca/en/schedules-and-maps/65-service.aspx
- York Region is offering the Transit Assistance Program (TAP) to help make transit more affordable for eligible residents. TAP participants are eligible for half price rides using a PRESTO card. After 40 trips, rides will be free for unlimited travel for the remainder of the calendar month.
